Royal Lochnagar
It was the illicit distiller James Robertson who established the Lochnagar Distillery in 1826. Soon after some fellow smugglers burnt it down, reportedly angry with one of their "own" going legit. In 1845, it was rebuild by John Begg, and he renamed it The New Lochnagar. Shortly after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert took up residence at Balmoral Castle, and John Begg invited them to see the distillery and the production. The royal couple liked what they saw and tasted, and rewarded the whisky with the Royal Warrant in 1848. Today the distillery is owned by Diageo, and is the smallest distillery in the hands of Diageo. Their total capacity is less than half a million litres annually.
Royal Lochnagar Distillers Edition
The Royal Lochnagar entry in Diageo's Distillers Edition range of whiskies. This one was finished in casks that previous contained well aged muscat wine, adding a floral richness to the spirit.
Elegant and dry, in the Highland style, fine old Royal Lochnagar invariably shows a pleasing cirtus acidity and an attractive, lingering finish. Skilled double maturation in old Muscat cask-wood brings a sweet, floral richness to balance this subtle sandalwood style and so reveals a deeper side of this regal malt whisky.
Tasting
Nose: Rich fruit on the nose, with hints of strawberry jam and allspice. A little banana, malt loaf and ground walnut.
Palate: Date and walnut cake, with cracked black pepper, fig conserve and spice. Deliciously malty and rich.
Finish: Long, nutty finish with lingering fruit and gingernut biscuits.
