The No. 209 Distillery
It all started when William Scheffler wanted to add a distillery to his wine making facilities. He registered the distillery with the Federal Government and was given distillery licensenumber 209. He proudly painted the number above the front door of his new distillery building. His distilled spirits were very high quality and won numerous awards, including a medal at the Universal Exposition of 1889 in Paris, France. This medal was for a long time lost, but suddenly showed up for auction, and is now on display at the original distillery in St. Helena. In 1999 the distillery was in for a revival, and the original distillery was to small and therefore they build a new one on Pier 50 in San Francisco.
No. 209 Gin
This No.209 Gin is vastly different from the juniper heavy gin of the past. This one has a perfect balance, with notes of citrus, spices and floral. It is distilled five time in three different batches to make the taste perfect. Afterwards it is blended, where it gets its floral profile. The name comes from the fact that this distillery was the number 209 to be registered in the US.
Tasting
Nose: Very aromatic with predominately citrus and floral notes with a hint of spice.
Palate: High notes of citrus followed by a hint of orange. As the warmth hits the mouth, delicate flower notes are liberated from the bergamot and coriander. Pepper and cardamom in the middle.
Finish: Cassia and other warm spices.
