Denmark's success began in 1906 when, as amateurs, they won the Intercalated Games in 1906 and then went on to win the Silver medal in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics.
However, the Danish Football Association prohibited their internationals from turning professional at clubs outside of Denmark. Subsequently, Denmark only qualified for their first World Cup in 1986, although they did win another Olympic Silver medal in 1960.
Denmark have been a force in international football since 1983, culminating in victory in the 1992 European Championships held in Sweden. Beating the then European champions the Netherlands in the semi final and the World Champions Germany in the final. Their best World Cup performance came in 1998, losing narrowly to Brazil in the quarter finals.
